"After witnessing the power of community support systems in Africa, we knew Central Florida needed the same — a refuge, a foundation, a place of stability for every family."

— Sarath & Joel K-Crystal, Co-Founders

Spirit Refuge Foundation team

A journey that changed everything — and a community that needed what they had to give.

Our Origin

A foundation born from lived experience.

Spirit Refuge Foundation didn't begin in a boardroom — it began in a calling. Founders Sarath and Joel K-Crystal brought together decades of combined experience in education, case management, counseling, and community service to address a clear and urgent need in Central Florida.

After witnessing firsthand the impact of strong community support networks during travels to Africa, the K-Crystals returned home determined to build something similar in Poinciana — a community often overlooked despite its tremendous need and potential.

The organization's vision came to life formally in 2025, launching with community outreach events focused on food insecurity and family support. Today, Spirit Refuge Foundation operates four programs designed to address the root causes of poverty through sustainable, people-first solutions.

Educator · Youth Advocate · Program Director

Educator, advocate,
and community builder.

Sarath K-Crystal is an educator, youth advocate, and community leader whose career has been defined by one consistent thread: a deep commitment to empowering families and supporting young people through mentorship, literacy development, and life-skills education.

She began her professional journey as a case manager at Morgan & Morgan, connecting individuals with critical resources during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. She later moved into education, where she found her calling working with middle-school students during pivotal stages of their development.

Her work expanded further when she served as a program director and group home director in Pennsylvania — working directly with vulnerable youth and families who needed mentorship, stability, and guidance. These experiences didn't just shape her career. They shaped her conviction.

"Community is not something you build once — it is something you tend to every day, one family at a time."

After traveling to Africa and witnessing the transformative power of community support systems, Sarath and Joel returned to Central Florida with a renewed sense of purpose. In 2025, that purpose became Spirit Refuge Foundation. She holds an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and is currently pursuing her Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership at Grand Canyon University.

Born & raised in Ghana

Counselor, mentor,
and servant leader.

Joel K-Crystal is a counselor, community advocate, and leader whose entire life has been shaped by a commitment to serving others. Born and raised in Ghana in an environment strongly influenced by community service and missionary outreach, Joel grew up understanding that supporting families and uplifting those in need wasn't just a calling — it was a way of life.

From a young age, Joel developed a passion for mentoring and counseling individuals facing personal and social challenges. His work centers on strengthening families, encouraging youth development, and helping individuals find direction and stability during difficult seasons of life.

He holds an MBA from the University of Ghana and brings extensive experience in counseling and mentorship within ministry and community settings. At Spirit Refuge Foundation, Joel leads outreach efforts focused on addressing hunger, supporting youth mentorship, and expanding access to literacy and life-skills education.

"When one person rises, they lift the family. When the family rises, they lift the community. That is the work we are here to do."

Together, Joel and Sarath have built Spirit Refuge Foundation on a shared belief: that sustainable change happens not through programs alone, but through genuine, lasting relationships with the people and communities they serve.
